The golden age of Sarajevo is considered to be 16th and 17th century when the city became one of the main centers of trade in the whole Balkans. The 20th century brought modernization and after the WWII Sarajevo found itself in a communist state of Yugoslavia. The population of the city started increasing rapidly. Whole neighborhoods and building blocks were constructed in a typical socialist style of architecture.
Starting from our office we drive towards the Olympic complex which was built for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. Above all, it represents the proudest moment in the modern history of Sarajevo. There we will visit the Olympic Games Museum situated in the Olympic Hall once used for figure skating and ice hockey. On our way to New Sarajevo we will be able to see Ciglane, a socialist neighborhood of Sarajevo representing modern social architecture.
Then we continue towards the western part of Sarajevo that was mostly built during the Communist period. We’re passing next to military barracks “Marshal Tito”. It is one of the largest military compounds in the former Yugoslavia. Large parts of them are these days used by the University of Sarajevo.
Later on the tour proceeds to the Vraca Memorial Park commemorating the World War II victims of Sarajevo. It contains a fortress, statues and marble plates with names of different partisan brigades, as well as the names of the victims of Sarajevo.
Many people of the former Yugoslavia still have nice memories and positive things to say about their former country. So much that there is even a term Yugo-nostalgia. We will finish the tour in Tito Cafe where people who are Yugo-nostalgic can share their stories in a Yugo-friendly environment. Join our Yugoslav Classic Car Tour and feel the spirit of former Yugoslavia.
