Itinerary

Bijambare Cave and Spring of River Bosna Tour begins with a scenic drive from Sarajevo to one of Bosnia’s most stunning natural wonders – Bijambare Cave complex, located around 40 km from the city. As you leave the urban area behind, you’ll enjoy a peaceful ride through green hills and mountain landscapes that define the region.

The first part of our Bijambare Cave and Spring of River Bosna tour takes you to the Bijambare Protected Landscape, one of the most beautiful nature parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Upon arrival, we’ll take a pleasant walk through oak, beech, and pine forests, surrounded by the sounds of streams and birds. The short forest trail (about 2 km) leads to a series of spectacular caves hidden deep in nature.

Gornja Cave (Upper Cave)

Our exploration begins with Gornja Cave, the oldest cave in the Bijambare area. Although not richly decorated with stalactites, it is archaeologically significant, containing traces of prehistoric human life and ancient fauna. From here, you’ll also enjoy panoramic views of the forest-covered valley below.

Srednja Cave (Middle Cave)

Next, we visit the Srednja Cave, the highlight of the complex and one of the most beautiful caves in Bosnia. This cave features a main hall larger than an average stadium, with magnificent stalactites, stalagmites, and natural formations illuminated by gentle lighting.
This magical cave even hosted a wedding ceremony, making it one of the most romantic and unique venues in the country.

Lower Cave and Stećci Medieval Tombstones

We’ll also explore the Lower Cave, located beside a small lake and stream that reflect the serenity of the surrounding nature. Nearby, you’ll find a collection of “Stećci” – medieval tombstones, recognised by UNESCO as part of Bosnia’s cultural heritage. They are silent witnesses of the country’s deep historical roots and medieval traditions.

After exploring the underground world of Bijambare Cave, we continue to the Spring of River Bosna (Vrelo Bosne), one of the most famous nature parks near Sarajevo. This lush green oasis is filled with streams, waterfalls, wooden bridges, and crystal-clear water emerging from the foothills of Mount Igman.

Here, you’ll have time to walk along the park trails, relax by the river, and capture some of the most photogenic spots in Bosnia. For a complete experience, you can enjoy an optional horse carriage ride through the famous Austro-Hungarian oak alley, lined with elegant villas from the early 20th century.

After a day surrounded by nature, history, and fresh mountain air, the Bijambare Cave and Spring of River Bosna tour ends with a relaxing drive back to Sarajevo. You’ll return refreshed, with a sense of calm and admiration for Bosnia’s incredible natural beauty.

Really appreciate Bosnia Tours still took us on this tour despite bookings being low. Our tour guide, Agan, was very friendly and ensured we knew how to navigate around to caves and then spring of river tour. The actual areas are underrated, very beautiful, can easily spend half day in each section. Definitely something to do, if you want to explore the beauty but are limited on time for full day hikes.

Really enjoyed this tour just a short drive from Sarajevo into the mountains for a gentle walk through the forest to the caves and then back to the beautiful riverside park in Sarajevo. Our guide Amir was excellent, knowledgeable and warm explaining not only about the caves but also some of the culture and history of this wonderful country. Recommended.

Amir was a brilliant, friendly, knowledgeable guide, the destination was beautiful and interesting, and we both really enjoyed it. In fact, Amir went above and beyond, and took time out to explain the old gravestones on the way to the caves, which we really appreciated. It was an excellent half-day trip in really good company.

Excellent trip to the caves! We had been struggling to find out how to get to Bijambare from Sarajevo by public transport, and last minute we opted for this tour to skip the hassle – and it was worth it! Our guide, Senad was super friendly, chatty and really flexible – we got picked up outside the city center (outside the regular pick up zone), on time, and had a comfy ride to the Bijambare park. We wanted to spend a bit more time at the Bijambare park so we skipped the Bosna river spring, and then Senad dropped us off at a location of our choice. Really recommend it!
