Detailed description

Travel from Sarajevo to Kraljeva Sutjeska, a small village nestled in the mountains where the last vestiges of the medieval Bosnian royal court can be found. After your guide sets the stage and introduces you to the history of medieval Bosnia, visit a beautiful 14th-century Franciscan monastery which has served as an important spiritual and cultural centre for almost six and a half centuries. Wander through the monastery and visit the monastery museum to learn about this fascinating moment in Bosnian history.

After perusing the museum, walk around the monastery garden while learning more about the life of Catherine, the last Bosnian queen. Ruling during the Ottoman invasion of Bosnia, Catherine was separated from her children and sent into exile. In the village, women can still be seen wearing black dresses in honour of Queen Catherine who has become an important figure in Catholic folk tradition.

During the summer, it is possible to head to the top of the mountains to view the Bobovac fortress. Due to its advantageous position and superior equipment, Bobovac was considered the most important and best-fortified city of medieval Bosnia. It served as the headquarters for many Bosnian rulers, especially during the reign of King Stephen Thomas and Queen Catherine until the Turks conquered it in 1463, ending Bosnia’s independence.

On your way back to Sarajevo, visit the oldest house in central Bosnia dating back to the 18th century. Designated as a protected national monument, the house is an impressive example of traditional Bosnian architecture. Your last stop will be at a mosque built by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, known as the oldest mosque in Bosnia.

The tour was very interesting. I learned a lot about the siege of Sarajevo and the genocide. Our tour guide Armi was also very knowledgeable. I learned many things from him that I would never have learned if I had traveled alone. He was also very kind and always made sure everything was fine.
