Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque – Heart of Islamic Sarajevo
Sarajevo Islamic tour begins at the magnificent Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, built in 1531 by the Ottoman governor Gazi Husrev-beg. It stands as Sarajevo’s most iconic religious landmark and one of the finest examples of Ottoman Islamic architecture in the Balkans.
With its grand dome, elegant calligraphy, and marble courtyard, the mosque remains a living centre of faith, hosting daily prayers and important Islamic gatherings. Here, your guide will introduce you to the story of Islam’s arrival in Bosnia and how Sarajevo became the spiritual and cultural heart of the country.
Gazi Husrev-beg’s Madrasa and Library
Next, we’ll visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa, founded in 1537, an institution that has shaped Islamic education in Sarajevo for centuries. Its peaceful courtyard and traditional design reflect the city’s deep connection to learning and faith.
Across the courtyard, we’ll explore the Gazi Husrev-beg Library, one of the oldest active Islamic libraries in the world. It holds over 100,000 manuscripts, Qur’ans, and Ottoman-era documents, preserving Bosnia’s centuries-old Islamic intellectual heritage.
Emperor’s Mosque (Careva džamija)
The tour continues to the Emperor’s Mosque, the oldest mosque in Sarajevo, built in 1457 in honour of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. This sacred site marks the beginning of Islam in Sarajevo and was once the city’s main congregational mosque.
Your guide will explain the mosque’s importance in the formation of early Sarajevo under Ottoman rule and its continuing role as a place of worship and unity.
Alipaša Mosque

Baščaršija, Brusa Bezistan, and Morića Han
Stroll through Baščaršija, Sarajevo’s Old Bazaar, where mosques, bazaars, and caravanserais blend into one of the most authentic Islamic old towns in Europe.
We’ll visit Brusa Bezistan, the 16th-century covered market once used for trading silk and textiles, and Morića Han, an old caravanserai that welcomed merchants and travellers from across the Ottoman Empire.
Islamic Arts Museum and Sarajevo Clock Tower
Sarajevo Islamic tour continues to the Islamic Arts Museum, home to exquisite examples of calligraphy, ceramics, and textiles that reflect the artistry of Islamic civilisation in Bosnia.
Nearby stands the Sarajevo Clock Tower, built in the 17th century and still showing lunar time, aligning with the daily prayer schedule — a unique feature of Islamic heritage in Sarajevo.
Sebilj Fountain – Symbol of Blessing and Return
We’ll finish the Sarajevo Islamic tour at the famous Sebilj Fountain, the heart of Baščaršija. This wooden Ottoman fountain, built in the 18th century, is believed to bring good luck — legend says those who drink from it will one day return to Sarajevo.
End of the tour

The places we visited were very beautiful and truly reflected the unique characteristics of Bosnia. Ms. Arna was very helpful in assisting us to find good restaurants with reasonable prices, and she also helped us shop for daily necessities. In addition, we gained a lot of interesting historical knowledge from her. Although the tourist sites were very large, with Ms. Arna’s guidance it felt as though we had explored the entire area. She was also very flexible and understanding of our children’s wishes to spend extra time at certain locations. Overall, I confidently give this agency an 11/10.
