Tour overview

The Sarajevo Olympic Tour is created to let you experience the spirit of the Olympics and a flashback to the 1980s.

Among other Sarajevo tours, this one will give you a perspective into the Communist period when various nations from Yugoslavia worked together in order to host the first successful Winter Olympic Games in a Communist country.

Sarajevo hosted the XIV Winter Olympic Games in 1984, and the facilities used for this event are still representing the pride of Sarajevo.

In our half-day Olympic Tour in Sarajevo, we will visit Olympic Stadium Kosevo and Olympic Hall Zetra, where the Olympic Museum is also located. After that, we continue to our three beautiful Olympic mountains – Bjelasnica, Igman and Trebevic.

We invite you to join this tour and find out why Sarajevo has been declared the best host of the Winter Olympic Games of the time.

Itinerary

The Olympic tour in Sarajevo begins at the legendary Olympic Stadium Koševo, where the opening ceremony of the 1984 Winter Olympics took place. Built in 1947 by Youth Work Brigades from across former Yugoslavia, this stadium became a symbol of unity and post-war reconstruction.

Over the years, Koševo hosted world-renowned football clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan, as well as historic masses led by Pope John Paul II (1997) and Pope Francis (2015).

Today, the stadium is home to FK Sarajevo and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team. It proudly bears the name Asim Ferhatović Hase Stadium, honouring the legendary Bosnian footballer.

Next, the Olympic tour continues to Zetra Olympic Hall, built for the 1984 Olympics and once described as an “ultramodern sports facility”. It hosted ice hockey and speed skating competitions, where several world records were set.

The hall was heavily damaged during the Bosnian War but was later rebuilt with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Today, it carries the name Juan Antonio Samaranch Hall in honour of the former IOC President and Sarajevo’s great friend.

Zetra remains one of Sarajevo’s most important Olympic landmarks and was the main venue for the 2019 European Youth Winter Olympic Festival. Locals fondly remember it for the unforgettable Bolero ice dance performance by Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean during the 1984 Games.

No Olympic tour would be complete without meeting Vučko, the beloved mascot of the 1984 Winter Olympics. The friendly wolf still smiles from the Olympic Village in Mojmilo, reminding visitors of Sarajevo’s proud Olympic spirit.

Vučko, a symbol of courage, friendship, and the triumph of good over evil, became one of the most recognisable Olympic mascots in history. Standing near the original Olympic logo tower, you’ll hear stories about how Vučko changed the world’s perception of Bosnia’s wilderness and warmth.

Leaving the city behind, the Olympic tour continues toward the Olympic Mountains surrounding Sarajevo. The first stop is Bjelašnica, the highest mountain in the Dinaric Alps and the site of the alpine skiing events during the 1984 Olympics.

You’ll have the chance to take the cable car up the slopes, enjoy spectacular views, and breathe the crisp alpine air. In a cosy mountain hut, enjoy a cup of hot tea while your guide shares stories about Olympic competitions and athletes who once conquered these slopes.

Next, the Olympic tour continues to Igman Mountain, the venue for Nordic skiing, biathlon, and ski jumping during the Winter Olympics. The original ski jump towers still stand as reminders of the city’s sporting legacy.

Igman’s untouched forests and wide meadows are also a popular destination for hiking and winter recreation, offering peace and pristine nature only 30 minutes from Sarajevo.

The final stop of the Olympic tour is Trebević Mountain, once the site of bobsleigh and luge competitions. The concrete bobsleigh track, now covered in vibrant street art, has become one of Sarajevo’s most iconic landmarks.

From Trebević, you’ll enjoy the best panoramic view of Sarajevo, accessible via the modern cable car rebuilt in 2019 after its wartime destruction. A walk along the track provides incredible photo opportunities and a moment to reflect on Sarajevo’s Olympic heritage — a blend of triumph, tragedy, and renewal.

After a day full of Olympic stories, stunning landscapes, and historical landmarks, the Olympic tour concludes back in Sarajevo. You’ll leave with a new appreciation for the city that once hosted the world — and still proudly carries the Olympic flame in its heart.

I have been on many tours in other countries but no one comes close to this tour company – Meet Bosnia Tours.
So friendly and professional. I really enjoyed all of our excursions.
All of our tour guides were very knowledgable; and explained to us about the history of Bosnia and Herzogovina past and present.

I would highly recommend anyone reading this review to book their tours and excursions with this company. Trust me you will not be disappointed.

I would like to give a shout out to our tour drivers: Enis, Almeer, Taharek and Harris for keeping us safe on the road – especially on the days where it was extremely foggy in the evenings and visibility was zilch!
A special shout out to the knowledgable tour guides: Enis, Almeer, Vildan and Elma.
You made the tours thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. Your interactions with each & every one of us was very friendly & professional.
Last but not least, I would like to thank both Ilma and Ayesha for helping us choose the tours and explaining each tour in depth and their amazing customer service.

Keep up the good work guys and I look forward to seeing you all in the near future when I visit Bosnia and Herzogovina again.

The places we visited were very beautiful and truly reflected the unique characteristics of Bosnia. Ms. Arna was very helpful in assisting us to find good restaurants with reasonable prices, and she also helped us shop for daily necessities. In addition, we gained a lot of interesting historical knowledge from her. Although the tourist sites were very large, with Ms. Arna’s guidance it felt as though we had explored the entire area. She was also very flexible and understanding of our children’s wishes to spend extra time at certain locations. Overall, I confidently give this agency an 11/10.
