Facts about Bjelašnica

A quick introduction to Bjelašnica

Bjelašnica is a mountain in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is found directly to the southwest of Sarajevo, bordering Mt. Igman. Bjelašnica’s tallest peak, by which the whole mountain group got its name, rises to an elevation of 2067 meters (6782 feet). Other notable peaks are Krvavac (2061 m), Mali Vlahinja (2055 m), and Hranisava (1964 m). The Bjelašnica range is bordered by the Rakitnica in the south, the Neretva in the west, Mt Igman in the northeast and Mt Ivan in the northwest. Only at 20 minutes distance of Sarajevo, it is a tourist attraction for hiking and skiing.

Name etymology

The mountain’s name stems from the root bijel, which means “white”.

Bjelašnica geology

Geologically, Bjelašnica is part of the Dinaric Alps and is formed largely of secondary and tertiary sedimentary rock, mostly Limestone and Dolomite.

What makes this experience amazing

This winter we present an entertaining activity for all-mountain lovers: snowshoeing. If you have ever tried this amazing sport, then you surely know that great fun and unforgettable memories require snow, sticks and a little exercise.

The experience of snowshoeing is something you will never forget. Walking in the snow certainly adds a new dimension to hiking and climbing a mountain is a striking way to spend your weekends.

Hiking is easy and fun in spring, summer and autumn, but during the winter these healthy walks are now under 2 meters of snow, so hiking on snowshoes and poles, with the sun shining on the snow, is another reason for this challenging sport.

If you’re into snowshoeing or would like to try it out as a new activity, don’t hesitate. A new, specially crafted Sarajevo snowshoeing tour experience will help you master it. We offer you a pleasant atmosphere and all the needed skills to enjoy the charms of snowshoeing on our Olympic beauty Bjelašnica throughout the winter season.

My mum and I had an excellent trip. Edin, our tour guide did an amazing job. Not only is he well versed in history, he also managed to incorporate architecture and nature in our trip. All in all I had a fantastic trip. I would definitely book them again for my next trip.

I was lucky enough to have had a tour with ‘Meet Bosnia’ and it was, quite simply, fantastic; be it nature, or an exploration into the history of Bosnia itself, ‘Meet Bosnia’ will meet and exceed your expectations. This is also due, in no small part, to the remarkable quality of the guides themselves, which for us was Edin; you will not find a more friendly, reliable informative and honest guide. For us it did not seem as if we were simply being led by a guide, but rather guided by a friend. Do yourself a favour; if you plan of visiting Bosnia, be sure to arrange with Edin and ‘Meet Bosnia’ to be the ones to truly show it to you.

I am really glad I took the tour. The weather was amazing today, we saw so many things. BiH is amazing. Samir – our guide – gave us a lot of information, we spoke the whole day – together with the other two people attending the tour. As I stay in Sarajevo only 2,5 days it was an amazing opportunity to see so many things. I would really recommend if you only have a limited time here 🙋‍♀️ Thank you!
